What is IBM COBOL and what is it used for?
COBOL stands for Common Business-Oriented Language. It is designed for business development, usually oriented to files and applications. It is not designed to write system programs, such as an operating system or compiler. A compiler developed by IBM COBOL maximizes the use of z/Architecture, essentially allowing previously installed COBOL applications to run in environments with a much more modern infrastructure, preventing their functionality from becoming obsolete by providing native support.
